Night Comes Soft

Vol. I Mvmt. 7 - Night Comes Soft (A Mossflower Lullabye)

While I think this definitely fits into the storyline of the first Redwall novel, it is actually inspired by a later novel in the series called The Long Patrol. The rhythm, while not exactly the same, is very similar to a poem sung to the young ones in Redwall:

Night comes soft, 'tis daylight's end,
Sleep creeping gently o'er all,
Bees go to hive, birds fly to nest,
Whilst pale moon shadows fall.

Silent earth lies cloaked in slumber,
Stars standing guard in the skies,
'Til dawn steals up to banish darkness,
I must close my weary eyes.

Safe dreams, peace unto you, my friend,
Night comes soft, 'tis daylight's end.

Like I said, it doesn't fit exactly, but if you use some imagination and rework the words a little, it's possible to make it work. In any case, the lyrics aren't as important as the feel of the music.

I also tried something a little different with instrumentation on this one, too. You'll notice that the piece begins and ends with the metallic sound of the celesta. I wanted it to bring about images of a music box playing softly as the young ones drift off into sleep.
