It doesn't take a PhD by HarmonicSonic It doesn't take a PhD by HarmonicSonic
One of my main purposes of making this was to try out my new stamp template. All things considered, I believe things worked out pretty well.

As for the stamp - I'll admit that people can get a little picky when it comes to spelling. Normally, I don't make a big deal about it, but there are exceptions to that rule. The biggest one is in making stamps. If you're trying to get an important message across in your stamp, people are far less likely to take your point seriously if every other word is spelled incorrectly. It may not be fair or right, but it is a fact that cannot be avoided. (The same thing can be said about grammar; I have a similar stamp about that.)

I realize that for some people, English is not your first language. But the fact that you are here on DeviantArt posting in English, interacting in English, and commenting in English reveals that you have some knowledge of the English language, or at the very least - access to an English translator.

For those of you who do speak English as your primary language, remember what I've said. Of course, you aren't under any obligation to exercise proper spelling/grammar. But you will go much further if you do. If you're going to take all that time to make a stamp, take the extra two seconds to type the word into your word processor or Firefox to check the spelling.

Edit: I thought this stamp turned out very good, but I have to admit I had no idea it would become so popular. I really don't know how that happened, but thank you to everyone who has faved or commented.

I agree :) Specially on stamps >.< I hate seeing theese stamps, where the grammar and spelling makes no sence at all. And then i just think: Wtf? When i does see, that it is a 17 year old girl, who lives in the UK >_>
English isn't my first language, and i might often have some small fails in my grammar, and I'm ready to admit that, but i hate theese kind of people who bitches you down, because you did make a single mistake >_<
I even tried this once: I wrote together with someone, who was much better at english than me, and then i did make a single mistake. A spelling mistake, by hitting on the wrong button. As fast as i could, i fixed it with the little 'write the right word with a * after' trick, and i reached to do it, before the other one, could write a word. And what does i get 10 seconds after? "Duh, learn to spell"... i just though... what the? I even fixed the fail :XD:

I also think, that if anyone is going to right on people, then they could at least do it nicly, and polite >_> Not like this i once got on my comic: [link] << Surely a lack of courtesy :XD: Especially, when it is a user, that you have never seen before

Spelling out your words and actually typing correctly shouldn't make you sound like an asshole. =___=; If anything, if you cannot spell and you can't string a coherent sentence together to make a simple comment on a stamp - now that just makes you look like you never made it passed 9th grade English.

I mean, spelling correctly and using a Web Browser that has a spell check isn't that hard. And if your computer is too slow to download a new Browser... Well. Then I suggest that you should probably go back to school and pay attention. (: Especially if English is your first language.

It's pretty damn embarassing to someone in America when about 65% of foreigners (it seems) can spell and type more correctly than most Americans. (At least on the internet.)

I love you for this.
I'm not a native speaker and that makes me work harder on grammar and spelling so I don't come across as some sort of idiot. Besides, it can be sort of difficult to understand someone when they don't type properly and you're not born with the language. Text language always confuses me. /:

Thank you.

Several non-native-English speakers have told me that now. It was a point I honestly hadn't considered when I made the stamp, but it is another excellent reason for people to use proper spelling and grammar.

Wat ees theese speelings u speek uff?

No, no, if English is your primary language, I feel you should be obligated to spell correctly (unless it's a word you're not used to using or one of the really trick ones, like narcissism). :/

Ah well, itīs the same here in Germany... Somehow people donīt seem to know how to spell right anymore, and the terrible thing is - the more words I read which are spelt wrongly, the more often I make mistakes myself when I write something.

So very true.
I weep for the future when I see some examples of people's spelling in written works.

At one point some drop kicks were petitioning the government to allow 'text English' to be viable in an English exam for school.
Luckily that got laughed out of parliament the second it arrived but still.

Using a spell checker is neither hard nor time consuming. Kudos for the stamp... I shall :+fav: it with pride :)

I don't really see how spellings matter in a stamp, it's the point that matters. If people fail to see the point because of a spelling mistake, then I think it is them with the problem. Great spelling doesn't make up for a poor point.

I think that the reason it matters is this: if a person doesn't care enough about the message they're presenting to make sure it's presented correctly, then why should they expect others to care about it, either?

Your stamp is basically about people making spelling mistakes. If someone was to make a stamp about world hunger, war, crime, etc, and they made an intelligent comment but they made a spelling mistake, are you telling me I should expect people to care more about your stamp?

Some people can see past the 'physical' errors.

I'm sorry but attitudes like the one in this stamp piss me off. Let's say, poor people are less educated and not as well spoken as rich people. That doesn't mean that a rich person is more correct in what he is saying in comparision to a poor person just because he pronouced everything correctly.

No, that's not what I said at all. I said, if someone doesn't care enough about their message to make sure it is well-presented, then that person shouldn't expect others to care about it. Anyone rich enough to be making stamps (essentially, anyone with access to a computer) has access to dictionaries, resources, and peers who can check their work. A poorly-written message is just as correct as a well-written message, but that doesn't mean it's going to be taken as seriously. That's just a fact of life, no matter how unfair it may be. I'm sorry if my attitude doesn't live up to your standards, but I'll remind you that you're not under any obligation to add it to your favorites.

The only times I find bad spelling excusable is if you are dyslexic, like my best friend who needs help to spell and actually tries, and if English is of course not your first language. When you're trying to communicate or express yourself online to strangers it's best to type as correctly as possible.

Well, it's pretty hard, when English is not your mother tongue. Trust me, I use translator and it simply sucks. DA is place where people from many countries can write to each other and English is a great language, but you can't expect people to know it perfectly. Believe me, I'm really good in Polish (one of the hardest languages to learn in world), so it pisses me off, when I do mistake in other language and people automaticly think, that I'm dumb.

I don't think he means you, you spell better than some Americans. For whatever reason, many teenagers(and adults) seem to think it is perfectly okay to leave vowels out of sentences, shorten any word they can, and use language they would while IMing, on things like these comments or on Facebook simply because of the fact they are on the internet. I get angry when I see someone with horrible grammar and spelling, but I make sure to check the country they are from first.
